56: Charli XCX – Vroom Vroom

Somewhere between today and a barely-documented iTunes Festival performance alongside Alex Metric in support of Swedish House Mafia in the summer of 2011, Charli XCX went from a dramatic vocal highlight of a mediocre dance track to a pugnacious powerhouse of rebellious pop. We can probably thank Icona Pop and Iggy Azalea for it (and precisely nothing else) and, by extension, her new experimental pop label Vroom Vroom, which launches a SOPHIE-produced inaugural bundle this week. First impressions of ‘Vroom Vroom’ and ‘Trophy,’ two peeks at its contents, are generally positive, though the caveat of SOPHIE’s disconcerting and downright peculiar stylings, as explored in my review of his album Product last year, must remain front and centre.
