60: The 1975 – UGH!

I’ve yet to listen to The 1975’s latest record I Like It When You Sleep, For You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware Of It for two reasons: its temporary absence from Spotify at launch, and its title being so overwhelmingly pretentious in Matt Healy’s developing inexorable fashion that I doubt I’d be able to last very long without feeling the urge to propel my laptop from the tenth floor window beside which it resides. An exclamation of ‘UGH!’ was my instinctive reaction to ‘Love Me,’ its first single, yet this second cut gave me an inaugural appreciation of something Manchester’s resident faux-indie boyband has sprinkled to their adoring masses. It doesn’t make Healy and co. any less obnoxious, and there’s still plenty of irksomeness distributed around, but it’s certainly the catchiest and delightful record about a singer’s cocaine addiction since The Weeknd couldn’t feel his face.
